WASHINGTON — The federal government is now considering how much it will spend on Viagra, but the number could go up as high as $2.1 billion per year, the Food and Drug Administration said Wednesday.
The FDA is looking at the potential to save the pharmaceutical industry money. But the drugmaker is also looking at ways to reduce prices and expand the market.
Viagra has been one of the most popular drugs in the world, with more than 6 million prescriptions written annually in the United States. The drug is used to treat erectile dysfunction, or impotence, in men.
Viagra has been available for less than a month, and its cost is about $300 for a 60-milligram dose.
The government estimates that Viagra will cost the government between $1.8 and $2.1 billion per year over the next 10 years. A company spokeswoman said the drugmaker is evaluating the drug and considering other options.
The drugmaker is also looking at ways to boost sales growth in the United States, which has the highest prescription drug spending per capita in the U. S.
"I don't think there's a lot of question about how much it will increase, but that would be a great thing to do, as I think it is a great thing to do," said Bob Dole, the company's chief executive officer.
In a note released Wednesday, Pfizer Inc. said the company is "evaluating the cost of the drug and is exploring other options to reduce prescription drug costs." The company also said it is evaluating the drug's potential to have "high side effects," such as headache and upset stomach.
The FDA said it is working on ways to reduce the amount of Viagra sold by drugmakers that are sold in the United States. The agency also is reviewing the potential for increased use of the drug, which is not covered by most Medicare and Medicaid plans.
The FDA has asked Pfizer to conduct a study on the impact of Viagra on Viagra sales in the U. and to consider whether it would lead to higher costs.
Pfizer said it has "not found any substantial evidence that Viagra is associated with increased health problems." The company is continuing to review its options and will update its information as soon as possible.
Pfizer said it will continue to monitor Viagra sales closely and will share the results with other drugmakers.
Viagra is made in the U. by GlaxoSmithKline plc, which makes the drug. It is sold in several countries.
